“Hello?”
“Hey Daddy,” I sniffled, wiping my sore, running nose with a piece of worn toilet paper. Sitting in my car, a black Audi A5 Coupe that Alex had brought me for my twenty-first birthday a year ago, I stared out at the picturesque property that was in front of me. My head twirled as I attempted to wrap my mind around what I learned hours ago. The beautiful home that was paid for with dirty money. Could I really leave him? He had been my entire world for the last four years. My every thought, decision, and action was based on him. Could I actually leave the love of my life? Could I stay with such a beautiful liar?
After mulling over my decision for hours while Alex slept, as if the news he had given me were as simple as switching what brand of bread we eat, I called the only man I knew that I could trust to be honest with me.
“Hey Angel,” my father greeted me in his usual tone of delight. “Hold on, let me get your mother on the phone.”
“No, no,” I spoke quickly. God knows that my mother was the last person I wanted to speak to. This entire situation still had my soul stirred like a pot of soup and I didn’t need her and her ‘I told you sos’ sprinkled in. “Please Daddy, don’t get Mommy right now.”
Hearing the dismay in my voice and my obvious unwillingness to speak with my mother, grabbed his full attention. “Angel, what’s the matter baby?”
“Daddy, I think I have to leave Alex,” I sniffled, fanning my hand in front of my eyes in attempts to stop any more tears from falling. But it was useless. Just hearing the words escape my mouth was enough to create an instant broken heart induced breakdown.
“Shhh, shhh, shhh,” my father started in a soothing voice while he tried to calm me down. “Babygirl what happened? Why are you two breaking up?”
I couldn’t manage to speak.
“Angel talk to me honey,” he insisted gently. “I can’t help you if you don’t talk to me. What happened?”
Coaxing myself to calm down, I began to tell my father everything. “I found out that Alex isn’t who I thought he was.”
“And what did you think he is that he isn’t?”
“Honest,” I choked out. “I thought he was a good guy, Daddy, one of the few good guys left; but he’s not. He’s a liar just like the rest of them. A liar.”
“What did he lie about?”
“Everything,” I whaled. “Who he is, what he stands for, what he does for a living; he lied about everything and like an idiot I believed all of it. How could I be so stupid?”
Despite my hysteria, my father remained serene. “He’s not with that Fortune 500 company?”
“He’s a drug dealer.” Overwhelmed with emotion, I dropped my head to the steering wheel and let the tears take control. The words bounced around repeatedly against the walls of my throbbing brain and spilled from my lips.
